For wireless networks, broadband routers use various protocols, the most popular of which are 802.11B, 802.11G, and 802.11N. With connection speeds of up to 300 Mbps (megabytes per second), the N protocol is the fastest of the three choices.
Suppose the computers, handheld devices, or gaming consoles that connect wirelessly to your D-Link router only have 802.11G wireless adapters. In that case, you can adjust the router's settings to only use the G wireless protocol or use all three protocols simultaneously.
Step 1: Open a Web browser on a device that uses the D-Link wireless router to connect to the Internet.
Step 2: Click "Enter" after typing "192.168.1.1" or "192.168.0.1" into the Web address input area at the top of the browser's screen. Type your username and password into the appropriate login fields if prompted. The Administrative Settings control panel for the D-Link wireless router appears.
Step 3: At the top of the Administrative Settings tab, click “Setup” in the main menu bar.
Step 4: From the menu icon, choose "Wireless Settings."
Step 5: In the main program window, click the down-arrow button next to "802.11 Mode."
Step 6: Set your router to only use the G protocol by selecting “802.11G” from the drop-down options list. Pick “Mixed 802.11N, 802.11G, and 802.11B” if you want your router to work with all protocols at the same time.
Step 7: To save and apply your changes, go to the bottom of the screen and click the "Apply Settings" button.
Changing the wireless frequency used by your D-Link broadband wireless router will help to resolve connectivity issues and signal drop-outs caused by nearby wireless networks. Wireless routers usually run on Channels 1, 6, or 11, but any of the 11 available channels can be used.
Pick the channel frequency manually on the D-Link router or use the device's automated channel scan function to find and set the best wireless channel for your location.
